Obituary for Andy John Hanson

Andy John Hanson, 81, of Herndon, died Sunday, July 3, 2022. He was born December 11, 1940, to Clarence and Anne (Henningsen) Hanson. Andy grew up on a farm between Atwood and Oberlin that was homesteaded by his grandfather John Hanson. He went to Linda Country School until high school. Andy graduated from Atwood Community High School in 1959. He then went on to attend and graduate from Fort Hays State University.

Right after graduation, Andy was drafted into the United States Army. He was sent to Fort Leonard Wood, in Missouri, then to Germany, where he worked in aircraft aviation. After his discharge, he went to work for the Kansas Department of Transportation and worked there for 37 years before retiring.

After his retirement, one of Andy’s favorite activities was to go to town to dine and have coffee with friends. He also ran the Hanson Family Farm, until his health made it necessary to move to the Good Samaritan Society, in Atwood.

Andy was baptized at the old Enne Lutheran Church, that later merged with Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Oberlin. He spent many years serving the church in various positions.

Andy was preceded in death by his parents; brother Edward; niece Deann Breen; nephew Michael Thompson and brother-in-law Dennis Horney.

He leaves to mourn his sisters, Elizabeth Horney, of Wichita, and Christina Thompson, of Colby; nieces and nephews, Fonda (John) Mangino, Nantick, MA, Troy (Fran) Emigh, Wichita, KS, Lisa (Quinn) Biggs, Rockville, MD, Debbie (Mike) Woods, Monument, CO, Brian (Jacque) Hanson, Atwood, KS, April Mull, Colby, KS and many great nieces and nephews.

Funeral service to be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 8, 2022, at Faith Lutheran Church, Oberlin, KS, with burial following at Fairview Cemetery, Atwood, KS. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and sent in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 391, Colby, KS 67701.
