Obituary for Charles Nick Wagoner
Charles Nick Wagoner was born in Colby, Kansas on June 29, 1934, to Greg and Margie Wagoner. He passed away on July 17, 2022, at Citizens Medical Center, at the age of 88. Charles attended Colby Public Schools, graduating in 1953 and went on to attend Barnes School of Business in Denver, Colorado. After graduating from college, Charles moved back to Colby and worked for his father at the family business, Wagoner and Sons. During this time, he met Patty Kelley, and they wed on January 25, 1958. Charles was sure to let everyone know that the reason he had to marry Patty was to get even with her because she drafted him into the Army. Their union was blessed with two children, Michael Wagoner and Michelle Phillips.
Charles remained in Colby and continued to work in the family business and as a local businessman until he passed away. He made many friends who turned into family throughout the years. We never knew how many people to expect at a holiday gathering because if someone had no place to go, Charles brought them home. Charles and Patty had lots of fun in their younger days whether it be Jeeping through the mountains, flying his plane, dancing until the sun came up, or burning the tops of his feet while traveling. His many hobbies and collections, too numerous to list, are a testament to his inquisitive and engaged mind. On weekends, Charles could often be spotted at auctions adding to his many collections. It is safe to say that some of his most prized possessions were his cars; he loved his cars. The grandkids will even tell you they are pretty sure some of the cars were more special than they were. They also remember that one of his many reminders “You might need that someday” was good advice and meant that he saved everything.
Charles worked hard and played hard. If it were up to him, we would all work seven days a week. Later in life, Charles did start to slow down, but only slightly! Charles and Patty traveled and attended car shows all over the United States. They were a highlight, and he planned his whole year around these events. He also loved his family. Whether it was working in the family business, traveling, or attending their activities, he was always there for them. Charles’ true-life story is in his family, friends, and business that he guided and nurtured throughout his entire life. He is much like the car parts that he sold in that his memory will continue on in the journey down the road.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Gregor and Margie Wagoner, brother Paul Wagoner, and grandson Nicholas Phillips. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Patty (Kelley) Wagoner, of Colby, his son Michael Wagoner and daughter Michelle Phillips, of Colby; his grandchildren Tara (Scott) Powell, of Colorado Springs, CO and Shawn (Maggie) Phillips, of Nekoma, KS; great-grandchildren Maleia and Hannah Powell; brother David (Marcia) Wagoner, of Colby, sister Tama (Roger) Sundquist, of Loomis NE, and sister-in-law Jeanie Wagoner of Colby. Additionally, he leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday July 23, 2022 at Sacred Heart Church in Colby. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2022 at Baalmann Mortuary, with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Charles’s name to be decided at a later date.
