Obituary for Judy Lee Schmidt (Cornett)

Judy Lee (Cornett) Schmidt, 69, passed away on January 1, 2023, at Hays Medical Center. Judy was born on April 24, 1953, to Lloyd and Ada (Elshire) Cornett in Colby, KS. She graduated from Colby High School in 1971. Judy attended Kansas State University and graduated with a degree in Home Economics. She taught for a year before moving to Chicago, Illinois to be a dietary aid in a hospital. In 1984 she welcomed the birth of her son AJ Cornett. She gave birth to her middle son John Schmidt in 1989 and also graduated with her Master’s in social work from Kansas State University. In 1990, her youngest son Steven Cornett was born.

Judy spent over 29 years working for DCF in Colby, KS. She spent her career making a positive impact in countless lives and serving others. Her hard work and selfness were just two of her many traits that people respected her for. Upon her retirement in 2018, she was able to spend more time with her family and her granddaughter Payton. Judy was able to make several cross-country trips with AJ transporting dogs across the United States. She would make frequent trips to Oklahoma to spend time with her granddaughters and making long lasting memories. Also, in her free time she crocheted countless baby blankets and lap blankets for family, friends, and residents of the local nursing homes. As kindhearted and wonderful of a woman as she was, she may be remembered the most for her baked goods. She was well known for her cookies, fudge, peanut butter balls, and her famous carrot cake that was requested by people in other states on a regular basis.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents Lloyd and Ada Cornett and sister Ruth Ann Cornett.
