Obituary for Maxine Marie Nelson

Maxine Marie Nelson, 89, died Thursday, November 18, 2021, at Citizens Medical Center. She was born November 4, 1932, in Harlan County, NE, to Carl O Zimmerman and Mora Katherine (Stark) Zimmerman. Maxine graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Education. She married Albert Keith Nelson on June 2, 1952. Upon moving to Colby in 1973, she became a reporter for the Colby Free Press and had a humor column for many years. She was a member of the Kansas Press Women and won several awards for her reporting and column. For many years, she served as a Weight Watcher instructor for the area. Maxine was active in her community. She was a member of many civic organizations and was an advocate for making businesses handicapped accessible for those who needed it. She was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many callings, but especially enjoyed serving in the Family Research Center. She was an avid genealogist. She also enjoyed her membership in the High Plains Art Club. She served as a Girl Scout leader and in the Boy Scouts for many years. Maxine enjoyed time with her family, gardening, genealogy, and making art of any kind, especially painting.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Albert Keith Nelson.

Maxine is survived by her children, Paula (Paul) Boyd, Derby, Ks, Carl O Nelson, North Platte, NE, Robert L (Christine) Nelson, North Platte, NE, Jo (Mike) Vandenberg, Salt Lake City, UT, and Eric (Gail) Nelson, Bellevue, WA; 13 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Cremation was chosen. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 am Dec 11, 2021, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1145 S Franklin, Colby, KS. Memorials are suggested to Pioneer Memorial Library or Prairie Museum, and may be sent in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 391, Colby, Ks 67701.
